I remember where I was on May 3, 2002 when I got my ticket to see Spider-Man. I was working as a security guard at a Menards store in Cedar Rapids. I agreed to hold down the fort while my supervisor, who also happened to be a friend and former roommate of mine, snuck out to buy us tickets for opening night. I remember being blown away by the movie… but not by Tobey Maguire. Don’t get me wrong, Tobey wasn’t wrong for the role, but he also wasn’t right, if that makes any sense. I guess it’s fair to say he was adequate. He always struck me as a whimpering puppy in a Spidey suit. He was a badass Spidey, but a really lackluster Peter Parker.

That said, I was still happy with the trilogy, with mixed feelings about the third installment. I didn’t feel it needed a reboot, especially so soon. But then I saw the teaser trailer… and I was instantly taken back to May 3, 2002. I was excited again, willing to give the reboot a chance. Then this morning I found the above trailer on Geeks of Doom and now July 3rd can’t come soon enough for me.

I like the return of Peter Parker, the science whiz, something that just seemed tacked on in the previous trilogy. While the organic webs were a fantastic touch (and let’s face it… it just made sense), it made Spidey a little too perfect. He never had to worry about running out of webbing, aside from that bout of depression in part 2. So, yeah, I like the mechanical webshooters.

From what I’ve seen, Andrew Garfield is spot-on as both Spidey and Peter Parker. And having Denis Leary and Martin Sheen in the film is just the icing on the cake. I loved Cliff Robertson’s portrayal of Uncle Ben in the original trilogy, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t think Sheen could do it better. Sally Field as saintly Aunt May, though? Mmmmmmm… I dunno about that one. Rosemary Harris seemed lifted right off the comic page. Field has some pretty big shoes to fill on that one. I’m not quite sure about Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, either. I really liked her in Easy A, but I can’t help but feel she’s being overused in movies lately. Time will tell if Stone and Field were good picks, but regardless, I’m very excited about The Amazing Spider-Man.
